Prairie Fruit Varieties

Apples, Applecrabs and Crabapples

Apples, applecrabs and crabapples are the easiest of the tree fruits to grow in our Prairie climate.

Most apple, applecrab and crabapples are budded or grafted onto a rootstock selected for hardiness, compatibility with scion materials, and the characteristics it will pass on to the mature tree. Rootstocks are either STANDARD, which give you about a 25 ft tree, or DWARFING, which will produce about a 10 ft tree.

It is very important that two different apple, applecrab or crabapple trees be planted in the same area (an area equivalent to two city blocks) for cross pollination. It is best to plant in areas with similar light conditions to encourage trees to bloom at the same time, which is necessary for pollination to take place.
