A plum (or known as as gage) is a pit fruit tree in the genus Prunus, subgenus Prunus. The subgenus is different from other subgenera (peaches, cherries, etc.) in the shoots by having a terminal bud and solitary side buds and the fruit having a groove running down one side and a smooth pit.

Mature plums may have a soft-white coating that can be easily rubbed off, this is known as ‘wax bloom’. Dried plums are called dried plums or prunes.
