Raspberries
(Key to abbreviations at bottom of page)

Raspberries have long been a favourite in the home garden. They grow very well, producing good crops of plump, juicy berries year in and year out.

Except for Double Delight, the red and yellow raspberries listed below are all floricanes. They produce their crop on one year old canes. Those canes then die and should be pruned out of the patch every year. The canes that are left should also be thinned to about 6 canes per foot of row. This will help keep your patch healthy, and larger berries will be produced.

Double Delight are primocanes, raspberries that grow and fruit in the same year.

Black raspberries produce on the same canes for two or more years and should be pruned accordingly. The canes grow long and tend to bramble. It would be best to contain them in wires or to plant them in an area where it will not matter if they sprawl.

Raspberries like a well drained fertile soil. You will have nicer berries if you can irrigate during the fruiting season, paricularly when the fruit is setting.
